    An independent study led by researchers from CSIRO Data61, UC Berkeley, UNSW Sydney and UCSI from Malaysia, a study analyzing 283 existing VPN applications on google play found that many of them were unsafe, filtering data, injecting Ads or contained malware.

    37 percent of VPN applications tested have more than 500K installations and 25 percent of them receive at least a 4-star rating, but according to Virustotal, more than 38 percent contain any malware presence: Adware (43 percent) , Trojan (29%), Malvertising (17%), Riskware (6%) and Spyware (5%).

    About 18 percent of the VPN applications analyse did not cite user traffic, and 16 percent did so by routing through other users' devices, so some might unknowingly be transmitting illegal content from their connection.
